Chapter 24: Five Years, One Day
I wrote the notice myself, at five in the morning, on the hall porch.
The sky over the river was still black, and the notice board was cold under my hand.
I wrote it in my records keeper's best script, on a clean sheet of the pack's good paper.
"Alpha Jarrett Colefield will take the mate vow with Willa Penhallow at the Moon Stone, Saturday, November seventh, at noon."
Under that I added one more line.
"Come and watch."
The council chair had signed it the night before, and so had the stooped woman.
The healer pressed her seal into the wax with her granddaughter's hand over hers.
There was no signature of the Elder.
There was a space where it had been, and I had left it blank on purpose.
I took the four brass tacks out of my pocket.
They were the same four, a little bent from the week they had spent in my fist.
I pinned the notice at the corners, top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right.
I pressed each one in with my thumb until it bit the wood.
