Chapter 17: Mustard's Toys

Gavin came into the library at ten past nine on Tuesday with a tray of coffees and a paper bag.

He had shaved, and he wore the blue sweater I'd once told him matched his eyes.

The whole circulation desk looked up.

There were four of us on staff that morning, and six patrons were already at the tables.

"Good morning, ladies," Gavin said, and set a coffee in front of each of my coworkers. "A little something from the Bradlees."

The head librarian took hers, because she was too polite not to, and then looked at me.

"Gavin," I said. "Leave."

"Two minutes, babe."

"Don't call me that."

"Willa." He lowered his voice, and every person in the room leaned in to hear it.

"I made a mistake. A lot of mistakes."

"That's the first true sentence you've said this week."

"I know." He took a small step closer. "I brought something for Mustard."

He opened the paper bag and took out a catnip mouse, a feather wand, and a ball with a bell in it.

Then he set a thin brochure on the desk beside them.

It was from a counselor in Portland, with a smiling couple on the front.

"I booked us a first session," he said. "Thursday at noon. I'll drive."

"You stole my cat last Wednesday."

"My mother took him. I told her it was wrong."
