Chapter 18: Sabrina's Turn

Sabrina didn't get out of the car, so I got in.

The box on the seat held a stack of glossy prints in a paper sleeve.

"Wedding proofs," she said. "The real ones. The photographer's whole set, before Mum picked the ones that went in the album."

Her hands were gripping the wheel at ten and two.

"Why are you giving them to me?"

"Because last night Mum told me I'm off the account."

She laughed, and it wasn't a good laugh.

"Eighteen thousand followers, and she gave the password to a cousin."

"Why?"

"She says the ledger was my fault. She says I filmed the wrong thing."

"What was the right thing?"

"Not you." She flicked her eyes at me. "I'd like you to hear me say that."

"I did it for years, and I never once asked why."

I opened the sleeve.

The first print was the church aisle, with me walking toward Gavin in my grandmother's veil.

My library card was tucked into my bouquet, and I'd forgotten that.

I looked so happy that it hurt to hold the picture.

The second was the guests in their pews.

In the third, far back by the open doors, a lean man in a dark suit stood with one hand on the frame.

He wasn't looking at the altar.

He was looking at me.

"That's Eli," Sabrina said. "I saw his face, Willa."

"Everyone in the family did."

"He looked at you like you'd come in out of a storm."
