Chapter 6: Rain

I took a picture of the black phone with my own.

Then I put it back exactly where it lay, face up beside the bread basket, and I stood.

When Gavin came back he found me with my coat on.

"Where are you going?" he said. "We haven't even ordered."

"I'm not hungry."

"Babe, sit down. The sea bass is the thing."

"You said every card," I said. "Every picture, every trip."

"I meant it."

"Then you won't mind if I ask your mother for it in writing."

I watched his smile stay exactly where it was while everything behind it moved.

"Willa. Please. Sit."

"Goodnight, Gavin."

I walked out of Harbor House into the rain.

It was coming down in sheets off the water, cold and sideways, and I hadn't brought an umbrella.

I didn't call Teagan.

I walked the six blocks to Marlin Street with my hair plastered to my cheeks, and I climbed the bait shop stairs on the left side, where there was no nail.

Elias opened the door before I knocked.

He was in a gray T-shirt and old jeans, with a pencil behind his ear and a camera strap hanging around his neck.

He looked at me, dripping on his mat, and his whole face went still.

"Come in," he said.

"Your mother told Gavin to keep me away from you."

He closed the door behind me.

"She told him whatever it costs," I said. "Why?"

"Let me get you a towel."

"Elias."

"Willa. You're shaking."

I was.
