Chapter 31: Review Day
Shortly before eleven on Saturday morning, April 24, three thousand one hundred people stood on Palm Avenue.
Each had a rifle, a pistol or a shotgun, and every one of them had read a page.
They filled the street from the bakery to Forty-Ninth and out along both sidewalks, in rows, with a sticker on each lapel.
WE SIGN.
The Judge's widow sat in a folding chair in front of the domino table with his old revolver in her lap.
At ten o'clock the man from the Doral board had stapled a Notice of Violation to a stake beside the ring.
It gave the Auditor seven days to remove itself.
She was seventy-nine, and she had signed on Tuesday, and Yosi had stood behind her chair for ten minutes before anyone could make her move.
Abuela had set up her register on the sidewalk.
She sold the last cafecito of the old world at $1.25 to the man at the front of the line.
Then she wrote his name on a receipt.
I stood at the corner of Palm and Forty-Ninth, thirty feet from the ring of white salt, with a diver's watch and no weapon.
Across Miami-Dade the other thirty sites waited.
I had Deputized a hundred of the Roll ten minutes earlier, spread over the sites, with the Guard and Baptiste's agents behind them.
Crandall had the airboat dock on the Trail, and Gate Watch had Milander, and the Coast Guard had the Bay.
My Authority was 520, and I had spent it all on them, and I had one job left that did not need a bullet.
At 11:04 the ring hummed.
It was the same hum, in my teeth.
