Chapter 21: Read It Aloud

I walked down the center aisle in my own blue dress, and nobody stopped me.

Graeme saw me coming and stayed on one knee, with the ring still raised.

"Phoebe," he said, low, smiling for the phones. "Sit down. This is not your night."

"I know," I said. "It's hers."

I climbed the steps and stood in the spotlight beside Bethany.

She was shaking so hard the satin of her dress rippled.

"Everyone here knows me," I said, and the sound system carried it to the back wall. "I did Graeme's books for nine years. I won't be long."

Graeme got to his feet.

"Security," he said, over my voice. "Please escort my wife to her seat."

Nobody moved.

At table one the old builder had folded his arms.

I held my phone up to the microphone stand and pressed play.

Graeme's voice filled the ballroom, warm and reasonable.

"It's the proof. All that time, it was you, Phoebe, not me. It was your side, exactly like I told you."

I stopped it there.

Two hundred people were looking at the man on the stage.

"That was last week," I said. "He had a letter from a fertility clinic in his records room, six years old."

I waited a beat.

"It said he would almost certainly never father a child. He signed a form so I would never see it."

My voice held.

"Then I spent four years of injections blaming my own body."

Somebody near the back said, "Jesus."

Graeme laughed.

It was high and wrong.

"This is a divorce, everyone," he said. "She's bitter. Of course she is. Ask yourselves why a man would propose to the mother of his child in front of the people he loves."
