Chapter 10: Terms
Lena's POV
My mother woke me at six with a cup of tea and a glossy photograph.
"A goalie brought this to the door last night," she said. "He asked me to give you no thanks."
I held it under the lamp.
Travis's car. His hand low on Shelby's back. A timestamp in the corner.
"Mom, they traded him."
"They've put him on a list. It isn't the same."
She sat on the edge of the bed.
"There are two reporters on the sidewalk and a van at the corner. You can't stay here, and you can't go to a hotel with your name on the card. The goalie says he has a house on the lake."
"He said that to you?"
"He said it to the porch light, mostly. He is not good at asking." She patted my knee. "Go."
That is how I ended up at the end of a gravel road in Evans Bay, standing on the deck of a gray cedar house with my bag at my feet and Lake Erie flat and gray behind it.
Nate unlocked the door and held it open.
"There are two bedrooms. Yours has the lock."
"I don't need a lock."
"I know. I'm telling you it's there."
The kitchen was clean and bare. A pot of chili sat on the stove, and on the table a stack of towels had been folded square.
I put the rabbit on the counter.
He looked at it and did not ask.
We ate at the table with the lake going gold through the glass. He talked about the stupid things goalies do, like knotting their laces three ways and talking to the posts.
I laughed once, a surprised sound, and put my hand over my mouth.
