I stood the phone against the sugar bowl, and the three of us watched my sister cry.

Shelby sat on the edge of the yellow guest room's new crib, in a cream sweater, with one hand spread over her stomach.

Her eyes were red. Her voice was small and shaky.

"I didn't want to do this," she said to the camera. "But I'm scared, and I don't know who else to tell."

Nate had come in from the truck. He stood behind my chair with his arms crossed.

"My sister is not well," Shelby said. "She has been hurt, and I know that, and I forgive her. But she's been showing up at my home. She's been at our mother's table, telling lies about my baby."

The viewer count in the corner climbed.

"Now I've been told she and her mother have a recording. Something they made years ago, and cut up, to make my mother sound cruel." Her chin wobbled. "Please don't believe it. I'm only trying to have a baby in peace."

Under the video, the comments rolled so fast I couldn't read them.

Poor girl.

Leave her alone.

Nate's jaw went tight.

"She never said a word about what's on it," he said. "She just told everyone it was fake."

"Dolores taught her that," my mother said from the stove. "Say it first, and say it sweetly."

I watched my sister wipe her cheek with the side of her hand.

It was a good performance. I almost believed her myself.

"I could answer her," I said. "Right now, with the post, with the photo."
