Chapter 8: Your Rule
Massimo answered the phone on the fourth ring, and he said nothing at all.
Wynne sat up in the bed with the quilt pulled to her chin and listened to the voice that came out of the speaker.
"Son," Aurelio said, warmly. "I hope the drive was pleasant. I'm calling about Friday."
"Papa."
"I've moved the table up out of courtesy to the girl. Nine o'clock tonight, at the restaurant. The capos are very eager. I think it's kind not to make her wait."
"Tonight."
"Tonight. Bring her home, Massimo. She must be tired."
He hung up.
He stood naked in the bedroom doorway with the phone in his fist, and he did not turn around.
"He knows where we are," Wynne said.
"He knows we left."
"That's not what I asked."
"I don't know yet."
He pulled on his trousers.
She had her sweater halfway over her head when the stairwell below them creaked.
It was a long slow sound, with weight in it.
Massimo's head came up.
"Stay in here," he said very quietly.
"Who's that?"
"Fabrizio keeps three men on the Kensington route. One of them sells bread to the bakery downstairs."
"Massimo."
"Shut the door. Lock it."
He went out, closing the bedroom door behind him.
She heard the front lock click, and then the second one.
She heard the front door give way.
A body hit the kitchen floor, hard, and a man's voice swore in Italian, and then there was the flat crack of a fist on bone.
Wynne pulled on her jeans with shaking hands.
