Chapter 20: Squall
We left the creek at nine that night with every light on the Patience burning.
The captain came down Ida's dock at eight fifty in a Coast Guard rain jacket, with a heavy black camera around his neck.
"I'm off duty," he said. "I'm a private citizen on a private boat. Until midnight."
"And after midnight?" Jasper asked.
"After midnight I'm the man who arrests you."
He stepped aboard.
Ida stood on the dock with Biscuit and a thermos.
She pressed the thermos into my hands.
"Second Corinthians," she said. "Something about treasure in clay pots. I can't remember the rest. Bring him back."
"Which him?"
"Both of them. All of them. Bring my barge back too."
We went out under the bridge with the city lit up on our right.
The night was clear and hot and dead still.
There was almost no moon left, only stars, and the water lay flat as a tabletop all the way to the jetties.
The crew sat on the lift bags and ate Ida's sandwiches.
At the buoy I'd tied to the stern rail ten days ago, the big one cut the engine.
