Chapter 21: The Door
The captain kept his camera on the dark tug until it backed away toward the harbor and was gone.
Then he lowered it and checked his watch.
"Eleven thirty-four," he said. "Whatever that was, you've got twenty-six minutes."
Nobody asked what that was.
Jasper put his helmet back on.
I went over the side.
The channel was black and still and the water tasted of rain.
I followed the buoy line down hand over hand, faster than I'd ever swum it.
At ninety feet the stern loomed up out of the dark exactly where I'd left her.
LADY MARGARET in furred gold.
The wheelhouse on her back.
The door on the starboard side, and the chain through its handle, three times around the rail.
I didn't look through the broken windows.
Not yet.
I rigged the lift bags the way Jasper had drawn them on Ida's table.
Two under the rail on either side of the door. One above.
I clipped the straps to the steel and not the chain.
