Vespera smiled.
"You haven't heard the rest."
"I don't need the rest."
"He dives for a living, darling. He sleeps on the water. Every drop of salt from here to the jetties listens to me now."
She trailed her fingers in the creek.
The water around the houseboat rose an inch all at once.
Inside, Jasper didn't stir.
"He won't wake," Vespera said. "I sang him down an hour ago. He sleeps till I say."
My stomach went cold.
"You want the phone because of the song," I said. "You're on that tape. Under the wind."
Her smile thinned.
"Nobody on land knows what a song is."
"Mother's cousin would know it in one note. So would the whole court."
"Say it out loud," I said. "Here, where she can hear."
"She gave you the crown."
For the first time in my life, my sister's voice wasn't pretty.
"You. A baby who chased whales. I sat at her side a hundred years, and she gave it to you."
"So you took it."
"I took what was mine."
She rose up onto the rail.
Her tail turned to long white legs as it left the water, black silk clinging to them.
