Chapter 17: Supper Club
"Marlys told her that," I said. "To her face."
"Over the counter. While she took her payment."
Hedy picked up the gelatin cup again and put it down.
"Your Gran never said his name again. Not once. Not to me. She just locked that room."
I drove home from Duluth with both hands on the wheel.
Marlys had stood at her window and told him Gran was married.
Then she'd stood at the same window and told Gran he'd changed his mind.
Then she'd taken Gran's payment, every month, for forty-five years.
I pulled over at a gas station in Floodwood and sat there until I could see.
That night I did the math at the kitchen table.
Payroll was gone. The cure was fourteen thousand one hundred dollars, due June 22.
June was booked, but room money came in at checkout, a little at a time.
It wasn't enough. It wasn't close.
Leif sat down across from me with two beers.
"Say it out loud," he said.
