Chapter 11: The Cliff

We rode west in the dark, the two of us on one horse, and neither of us said a word for an hour.

He held the reins in front of me.

His chest was a wall at my back, and I hated how warm it was.

The cliff stood at the very edge of Greywater land, where the forest ended in a sheer drop and the road to House Lark ran away through the valley below.

He lifted me down and walked me to the rim.

The moon was nearly full. The valley lay white and empty under it.

"Seventy miles that way," Matvei said.

"I know where it is."

"I stood here the night I decided to stop waiting for proof."

I folded my arms.

"Start talking," I said.

He took a long breath.

"I knew you in the forest. Before I saw your face. Your sister's hair had a scent, wild apple and lamp oil, and it was in the wind."

My throat closed.

"I ordered the guards to miss," he said. "I ordered the cell cleaned. I took the key to your room from my own desk."

"And you offered me a son."

"I offered you the only thing the Accord would accept."

"Why?" My voice shook. "Why not just say, I know who you are, Sorrel, I'm sorry about Delphine, I'll keep you safe?"

"Because the Madam keeps men inside my walls."

I stared at him.

"Two on the council, one in the kitchens. I don't know all of them. If you had stopped playing a stranger and started playing my friend, they would have noticed." He looked at the valley. "And she would have known I was looking."

"Looking for what?"

"I can't say yet."

"Of course you can't."

"Sorrel."

"You can say this much." I took a step toward him. "What did the Madam tell you, the day you came back for Delphine?"
