Chapter 15: Silver

Matvei's POV

The midwife's word was yes.

It was one syllable, said in a doorway, and I had not stopped hearing it for two days.

Sorrel was carrying my child, and the Accord had its seal.

I should have been glad, and I was. But gladness had to wait behind the hawk.

The second strip of linen had come at dawn: the cart at the Fenmouth ferry inn, the Madam's lawyer in the taproom, the boy upstairs.

I told Sorrel before I told Anselm.

She stood in the study with her arms crossed and the midwife's seal in her fist, and she heard it out.

"I'm coming," she said.

"No."

"You promised me every plan."

"This is the plan. Six riders, the ferry road, back by tomorrow night." I held her eyes. "You're carrying the only paper that opens the Lark gate, and I will not put it on a horse beside a silver crossbow."

Her jaw worked.

She hated it. I watched her hate it, and I watched her see I was right.

"Bring him back," she said.

"I will bring you something."

"Matvei."

"I will bring you something," I said again, because I would not promise her a boy I might not find.

I rode for Fenmouth with the cold on my face and her seal on my mind.

We reached the inn at dusk.

It stood alone on the mud flats where the ferry road met the river, a long low house with smoke at the chimney.

I left four men in the yard and took one rider in through the front with me.
