Chapter 22: Say My Name
They held the ruling in the great hall at noon, with every wolf in Greywater packed against the walls.
Tobin stood at my side in a blue coat the cook had cut down from one of Anselm's.
He held my hand so hard my fingers went numb.
"A breeder's bastard," the elder said, from the floor of the hall. "Pack law is old and clear. The heir of an Alpha is born of a wolf mate, or he is not an heir."
"Then let us read the old law," said a dry voice.
It was the thin grey woman from the council.
She walked out into the middle of the floor with a book as wide as her arm.
"I have read it," she said. "I read it again last night. It says the heir is the Alpha's blood, and that the blood is proved at the naming."
"A formality," the elder said.
"It is the law, Cousin." She turned a page. "It also says that an elder who speaks falsely against an Alpha's blood before the full pack kneels to the child and begs his pardon."
Silence.
The elder's face went the color of old candle wax.
"That clause has not been used in three hundred years."
"Then it is long overdue," said the woman.
Matvei came down off the dais.
He walked across the stone with his shoulder still stiff, and he stopped in front of his son.
"Tobin," he said.
The boy looked up at him.
"Will you let me say your name to my pack?"
Tobin glanced at me. I nodded.
"Okay," he said.
Matvei turned to the hall and put his hand on the boy's shoulder.
"This is Tobin Dragunov," he said. "My son. My blood. My heir. His mother was Delphine Ashgrove, who I loved, and I was late."
The hall was so quiet I could hear the fire.
"Does any wolf here say otherwise?"
Nobody did.
The elder looked at the floor. Then, with the whole pack watching, the old man lowered himself onto one stiff knee in front of an eight-year-old boy.
