Chapter 21: Sunday
My mother didn't stop at the third pew.
She walked past it, past us, all the way to the front of the church, and stood at the bottom of the altar steps.
She was in a plain gray dress.
No pearls.
I'd never once in my life seen her neck without pearls on a Sunday.
Pastor looked down at her from the pulpit with his Bible open and his mouth slightly open too.
"Diane?" he said.
"I need five minutes, Pastor." Her voice was steady. Only her hands weren't. "My daughter says I owe them."
Pastor looked at me.
I didn't look away.
He closed his Bible and stepped back from the pulpit.
My mother turned around and faced the church.
Four hundred people.
The Rose Club in their Sunday hats in the second row. The bank president. Both county commissioners. The young deputy, out of uniform, with his wife. The retired judge on the end of the fifth pew, with his cane across his knees.
My mother opened her mouth and nothing came out.
She closed it.
Beside me Nana didn't move a muscle.
"Most of you know what I did," my mother said finally. "The parts that got out. I'm not going to tell it again. You've all told it to each other enough this week."
