Chapter 13: Daylight
I carried the courier's envelope into the cardiac recovery wing at nine, and Loyd was already awake.
He was propped up with a pillow clutched against his breastbone, the way the nurses had taught him to hold it.
His face was the color of old candle wax.
His eyes were sharp as ever.
"Tavish bought the notes," I said, and laid the letter on the blanket.
Loyd read it with his lips moving.
"Noon Friday," he said. "He's put it on a clock."
"I can wire him the money tonight."
"You can't."
"I can. My bank has a line against my shares."
"I know you can." He tapped the page. "That's why he wrote it so you'd do it tonight, at a desk, with nobody watching."
I stared at him.
He was right, and the fact that a man with a cut-open chest could see it faster than me made my ears go hot.
"Then tell me how," I said.
"Sit."
I sat.
He took a breath and winced, and Dinah put a hand on the rail to steady the bed.
"One," Loyd said. "You pay him on Friday, at the gate, with a paper check, in front of whoever shows up."
