Chapter 9: Five A.M.

At five on Tuesday morning the porch light was on at Isaiah's house, and the door opened before I knocked.

He stood in a gray cotton robe with a coffee cup in his hand.

He had shaved.

"You are awake," I said.

"You told me to be."

His house off Springhill Avenue was brick, small and neat.

A framed postal commendation hung in the hall, and a pair of polished shoes stood beside the mat.

Nothing in it was out of place.

I took the cup out of his hand and set it on the hall table.

"Where's your shower?"

His eyebrows went up.

"Down the hall. Naomi, I have not..."

"Then you'll find out what you've been missing."

I took his hand and led him down the hall to the only door with light under it.

The bathroom was blue tile from the nineteen sixties, with a glass door and a rubber mat.

I turned the water on and held my fingers under it until it ran hot.

Then I untied his robe.

He stood still and let me push it off his shoulders.

Underneath he was broad and solid and gray-haired, with two crescent bruises on his shoulders gone yellow-green at the edges.

I put my mouth to the closest one.

"Those are mine," I said.

"Yes."

"Where else do you want one?" I said.

His chest rose.

"I leave that to you," he said.

"Your neck, then. Above the collar. Where she can see it."

"Who is she?" he said.

"Everybody."
