Chapter 10: Kindness Is the New Glow
On Thursday morning I put on my work blazer and went to Blair's brunch as an employee of the Alder Grand.
Nobody could stop me.
I was the events manager, and the terrace was my terrace.
It sat on the fourth floor, with a glass rail and white umbrellas, and forty places set around long tables.
Blair stood at the head of the largest one in a pale yellow dress, shaking hands.
The sponsors came in a row of beige suits: three from a skincare company, two from a wellness-water brand, and a man from a travel site who had flown in to be photographed beside her.
A banner behind her read, in soft pink script, Kindness Is the New Glow.
I stood at the service door with a tray of iced tea and watched her smile.
Hoyt was already at the back with a headset on and one hand on the sound board.
He had patched the whole terrace into the hotel's speakers that morning, for her live toasts.
I looked at him across the umbrellas.
He raised one eyebrow.
I nodded.
"Friends," Blair said, and tapped a glass, and the speakers carried her voice. "Thank you for coming on what has been a very hard week for my family."
Polite murmurs.
"Many of you saw the video that was going around."
She pressed one hand to her chest.
"I want to say, from the bottom of my heart, that I have only ever tried to be kind."
I walked out of the service door.
The sponsors turned their heads one by one.
"Hello, everyone," I said. "I'm Margo Fenn. I work here, and I'm also her sister."
"Margo," Blair said.
"I've brought something for the table."
"This is a private event."
