Chapter 11: The Clip

By nine the next morning, the whole of Pike Hollow had seen my bedroom.

Not all of it.

Brock's lawyer had cut the clip to ninety seconds, and it was passed around the church group chat with a single line underneath.

Is this what the Kilbourn girl has been up to?

Eli showed me on his phone at the kitchen table.

I watched my own bare back in the dark, and a man's hand on my thigh.

"You can't see faces," Eli said quickly. "You can't see yours."

"You can see Abel's beard."

Abel touched his beard, very slowly.

"It's a good beard," Lyle said.

Nobody laughed.

I put my coffee down.

"I'm going to the diner," I said.

"Beth," Clint said. "No."

"Yes."

"Let me bring you breakfast."

"Clint," I said. "I'm going to eat breakfast in the middle of Main Street, in front of the people who sent that around. I'm going to order the pancakes."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"We'll drive," he said.

The Pike Hollow diner had twelve booths, a counter and a pie case, and on a Saturday morning, every seat was taken.

The room went silent when we walked in.

Five of us.

I walked in front.

I picked the big booth in the back window, and I slid in, and the four of them filled in around me, two on each side, shoulder to shoulder.

The waitress stared.
