Chapter 19: The Parking Lot
Brock held the phone up as high as his arm would go.
On the courthouse steps stood the judge's clerk, the county prosecutor and two of his own lawyers.
The buyer's agent stood there in his golf vest, with half the people from the diner.
"You want to see what she is?" Brock said. "Here's the whole thing."
He pressed play.
The sound came across the lot, tinny and loud.
It was my own voice, from the night I rode Eli, saying a word I had never planned to say in public.
Nobody laughed.
A woman near the front turned her face away.
The man in the feed cap said, "Turn that off, son."
Brock turned the volume up.
I walked across the gravel to him with my four men at my back.
I did not run.
"Play it again," I said.
His thumb stopped over the screen.
"Everyone here has already seen it. I told them so myself, at the diner, with pancakes." I looked at the steps. "I'm not ashamed of it. What else do you have?"
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The prosecutor came down two steps, a heavyset man with reading glasses on a cord.
"Mr. Ellery," he said. "Sharing an intimate recording of a person without her consent is a felony in this state."
He took his glasses off.
"You've now done it twice, once in front of me."
"It's evidence."
"Of what?"
"That she's..."
"Careful," Clint said, very softly.
Brock's lawyers looked at each other.
The older one closed his binder, tucked it under his arm, and walked to his car.
