Chapter 22: Seven Years
Chan had practiced this conversation for eight days, and none of it helped.
He stood in the doorway of the flour room with her cold tea in his hand and watched Missy look at him.
She was sitting on a sack with red eyes and her ring hand held very still, which meant she was holding something down.
Behind her, Jisung and Hyunjin were wrecked and silent.
"Chan," she said. "What deal?"
"Not in front of them."
"They've done their sins. Now do yours."
He set the tea on a shelf. His hand was steady, as it always was, and he hated it.
"Tonight," he said. "At dinner. I'll tell you everything."
"Now."
"I wanted to find the right way."
"There isn't one, honey. There's just now."
He had told himself for eight days that he'd choose the moment.
He knew now that he had been choosing a moment that would never come.
He reached into the inner pocket of his coat, where it had ridden against his ribs through the lighthouse and the bar and her husband's cabin, and he took out the envelope.
It was the company envelope he'd carried since the first day, the one he never opened in front of anyone.
It was open now, and creased from handling.
"Read it," he said. "Please."
She took it from him.
He watched her take out the pages and read the first, then the second, slowly, with a finger under each line.
He knew where she was in it without looking.
The renewal was seven years.
It moved his solo work to the company, every track and every credit, and every later decision about his own life.
