Chapter 33: The Lamp Room

The lighthouse key still hung on the nail inside her husband's old coat, and Missy took it down at dusk.

Six of them climbed the spiral stairs one behind the other, with the wind pulling at the door.

The lamp room was glass on all sides.

Below it the sea ran grey and white toward the harbor, and the town lay behind them in a scatter of small yellow windows.

The great lens sat in the middle of the floor, dark and cold, with the dust still on it.

"Here," said Missy. "Thursday night. Nine o'clock."

"Here?" said Hyunjin.

"You wrote your song here. You said the first line of it to me against that glass."

His cheeks went pink.

"The manager can bring a camera and a light," said Minho, who had a pad of paper and had been taking notes in small neat Korean since the car. "One take. No script."

"No script," said Felix.

"A speech," said Chan.

"No speech."

"Hyung." Felix put a finger on his chest. "Tell me you can stand in front of a lens and say what you feel without writing it first."

"I could try."

"We can all try."

They sat down on the cold floor in a ring around the lens, and Jisung produced a bag of cinnamon buns from his coat.

"Who goes first?" said Missy.

Nobody answered.

"Chan."

"I'll go first," Chan said. "It's my job to go first."

"No. It was your job. Now it's a choice."
