Chapter 36: Live

At ten past ten the manager set a small camera on a tripod in the lamp room and said, in a very calm voice, "We go in one minute."

Nobody was calm.

Jisung was on his third count of five.

Hyunjin had borrowed Missy's brush and had not used it.

Felix stood with his hands behind his back, in a clean white shirt, and Minho had put a hand flat between his shoulder blades.

Chan stood nearest the lens, and the sea light behind him made his black hair look blue.

Missy stood at the end of the line in her green dress with the top button done up, her rings on, and the lighthouse inked on her ribs where no one could see it.

"Do you want to move?" the manager asked her. "Back row?"

"No."

"Front?"

"Where I am."

The manager pressed the button, and a small red light came on.

The numbers climbed in the corner of the screen.

Forty thousand, and then ninety, and then more than the Wick had held in its whole life.

Chan stepped forward.

"Hello," he said. "My name is Chan. Some of you know me as the leader. Today I'm not here as the leader."

His voice was steady, and his hands were not.

"For the last twelve weeks, four of us have been living in a cabin in a town called Lighthouse Cove. We told the company it was a writing retreat. It was. It was also something else."

The numbers kept climbing.

"The woman who owns the cabin is called Missy Larkin. She's standing next to me. I'm in love with her."

Someone, offscreen, dropped a cup.

Chan didn't blink.

"I'm telling you because I was told to say she was a rental host, and I would rather say the truth and be fined for it."

"I'm Felix," said Felix, stepping up next to him. "I'm in love with her too. And my hyung is a coward who's learning, and I'm very proud of him."
