Chapter 5: Rafe's Terms

I got to the boathouse at nine that night with the fitting-room photos on my phone.

Rafe was sitting on an upturned crate at the end of the dock with two beers and no jacket.

He held one out without looking up.

"You said come by."

"I said I wanted to hear what you were doing."

"I'm doing this." I sat beside him and handed him the phone.

He scrolled through the photos slowly.

The tag. The pearl buttons. The ivory lace.

When he reached the last one, I told him all of it.

The vote. The chat called Plan J. The wedding fund. The dress with Brett's last name.

I told him what Dawn said, word for word, because I had said it over in my head all day.

He didn't interrupt once.

When I finished, he set the phone on his knee and was quiet for a while.

The water slapped at the pilings.

"So the plan," he said, "is to let them think you folded."

"Until June fourteenth. Then I stand up in front of a hundred and forty people and put it to a vote."

"Of what?"

"Whose wedding it is. Who paid for it. Who was never asked."

"That's a lot of ifs, Jo."

"It's a lot of people," I said. "They invited the whole church choir. Brett's boss is coming. Dad's pastor is giving the blessing. Dawn told me the guest list herself, one name at a time, because she's proud of it."

"And you want my hall."

"I want your hall. I paid the deposit, and Dawn put the date in her own name."

"Technically," he said, "she holds the date, and you paid the deposit she used."

"You're not helping."

"I'm being accurate."

I almost smiled.
