Chapter 14: Chengdu
At six the next morning, a one-line stay arrived from the league.
Lu Zhiyan could play until the hearing.
Ji had been on the phone since four, in the stairwell, and wouldn't say with whom.
"Lawyers," he said, and put a bowl of congee in front of Lu.
Lu looked at the bowl, and at the black circles under Ji's eyes.
He let it go, because Su Ran was yelling about luggage.
Chengdu in October smelled like pepper and wet leaves.
The Sky Arena was Lu's hometown stadium, and he had played his first real match in the cheap seats' shadow when he was fifteen.
Nightjar beat the home team three to one.
Lu took the last fight alone, in the left lane, and when the nexus fell the whole arena stood up.
Half of them were booing, and half of them were calling his name in the Sichuan accent he had spent three years sanding off.
"Lan-tern! Lan-tern!"
Ji stood beside his chair with a hand on the back of it and did not smile.
He looked at Lu.
"Series MVP," said the commentator. "Lu Zhiyan, coming home."
That night, the whole team ate hot pot at a place Lu picked.
It had a plastic stool for every ass and a red pot big enough to bathe in.
Su Ran lasted four minutes before crying from the pepper.
"I can't feel my face. Is that normal?"
"That's the mild one," Lu said.
"Ge, he's trying to kill us."
"He's trying to feed us," Ji said, and ate the fiery tripe like it was rice.
Lu watched him do it.
"You can take it," he said.
"I told you. I scout."
"You did not scout the spice."
"I ate here on the Chengdu away trip two years ago."
Ji dipped another slice.
"I sat at the next table. You didn't see me."
Lu choked on his tea.
Coach Pei, down the table, murmured, "Eat your tripe," and turned a page of his newspaper.
