Chapter 16: The Bath

Nightjar beat the Hangzhou team three to nothing, and qualified for Worlds with time to spare.

Su Ran jumped into the club's fountain in his jersey, and came out holding a goldfish.

"It was in my pocket!"

"It's a koi," said Coach Pei. "Put it back."

"Ge, I'm a champion."

"You're a regional champion," Ji said. "Put it back."

Lu laughed so hard he had to sit on the curb.

By midnight the house had emptied into its rooms.

The party noise dropped to a murmur and the clink of someone washing a pot.

Ji found him in the hall outside the scrim room.

"Come upstairs."

"Whose night is it?"

"Nobody's. Come upstairs."

Nightjar had one luxury, and Coach Pei was ashamed of it.

The fourth floor had a bathroom the club had inherited from a failed spa.

It was tiled in dark green, with a tub the size of a small car.

Ji had run it already.

Steam was curling off the water, and a single candle from Su Ran's emergency kit burned on the ledge.

"You planned this," Lu said.

"I'm a captain. I plan."

"For how long?"

"Since the second dragon."

Ji unbuttoned his shirt with calm fingers.

"You got a cut on your hand diving for the Titan, and you're still holding it wrong."

Lu looked down.

His right hand was clenched in a loose fist, and there was a thin cut across the heel of it.
