Chapter 23: Cold?
Lu woke at ten in Shanghai in a bed he had never paid for.
The blind was down and the house was silent.
Someone had put a glass of water and a packet of painkillers on the shelf beside his head.
His thighs ached, his throat was raw, and his phone said eleven thousand notifications.
He turned it face down.
The bed beside him was empty and still warm.
"I'm in here," Ji called, from the bathroom.
Lu padded to the door in his boxers.
Ji was in the shower, the glass fogged to the shoulders.
His head was bowed under the spray and one hand was flat against the tile.
He turned his head.
"Come in."
"Is that an order?"
"It's a request. Come in."
Lu came in.
The water was perfect, almost too hot, and Ji's hands settled on his shoulders as he stepped under it.
"Turn around."
"Mm."
Ji took the soap, worked it into a lather between his palms, and began to wash Lu's back.
It was slow and quiet.
His thumbs pressed into the long muscles beside the spine, and Lu's head dropped forward onto his arms against the tile.
"You're good at this."
"I scouted your posture."
"Nobody scouts a back rub."
"You sit like a question mark," Ji said. "It's in the notebook, under habits."
