Chapter 11: Unless I Asked

Nessa's POV

He came in and shut the door behind him, and the dark in the cabin got smaller.

I could hear the creek through the wall and his breathing a pace away.

"You asked me to ask again tomorrow," I said. "It's tomorrow."

"It's three in the morning."

"Then it's tomorrow."

He made a low sound that was almost a laugh.

I crossed the floor and put both hands flat on his chest. His heart was going hard under my palms.

"Unless you asked," he said, rough. "That was the term. I won't touch you unless you ask."

"Then I'm asking." I lifted my face. "Kiss me, Kieran."

He did.

His mouth came down on mine slowly, and then not slowly at all.

It was hot and deep and a little desperate.

His hand slid into my hair and held my head.

His tongue stroked into my mouth, and I made a sound I did not know I could make.

I had spent fourteen years being touched only to be hurt.

This was the opposite. Every place he put his hands, my skin opened toward him.

I pulled at his shirt. He got it over his head in one move and dropped it.

His chest was broad and scarred across the ribs, and I put my mouth on the scars one by one.

"Nessa," he said, and his voice cracked.

"Take this off me."

He took the grey shirt in both fists and pulled it up and over my head. I stood there in the dark with nothing on but my skin.

His breath went out of him.

"Look at you," he said.

"Don't look. Touch."

He lifted me.

My legs went around his waist, and he carried me to the bed in three steps.

He laid me down and came over me, with his weight held on his forearms.
