Chapter 13: The Cup

Dorian had a shirt on and the door open before I finished saying Garrick's name.

We ran the length of the tower stair together.

I could hear Verity screaming from three floors up, and now I could hear everything under it too.

Boots, doors, a hundred wolves waking in the west wing at once.

The great hall was lit by a single torch, and Garrick lay on the flagstones where I had seen him.

His back arched.

His heels drummed the floor, and his teeth were bared in a grin that wasn't one.

Verity knelt a yard away with both hands pressed to her mouth.

She didn't dare touch him, and she knew exactly why.

"Do something!" she screamed at me. "You did this! Make it stop!"

Mum came through the east door in her nightgown with her bag already open.

She knelt on Garrick's other side and put two fingers on his throat.

"His heart is fine," she said. "It's the bond. It felt you take a second mate."

The hall had begun to fill.

Wolves stood in the doorways in their nightclothes.

The Elder Mother pushed through them with her grey braid over her shoulder, and she saw my loose hair, my bare feet and the mark of teeth on my neck.

She understood all of it in one look.

"Treason," she said.

Nobody breathed.

"The Alpha's mate has lain with a vampire lord, while she holds the Alpha's bond and carries his heir." She turned to the wolves behind her. "You see her. You see what she is."
