Chapter 15: The Sentence

The Redmoor elders voted on the ring's cold earth, with the torches guttering and the sky going pale.

There were five of them, and they didn't look at each other.

The oldest was a stooped man with a stick, and he spoke for them all.

"An Alpha who sends silver to his own mate has broken the first law of the pack," he said. "An Alpha who wins by silver in a Moot ring has broken the second."

Garrick sat on the ground where I had left him.

"We take the seat," the old man said. "Garrick Hallam is Alpha no more."

Nobody gasped.

The wolves of Redmoor had seen the post smoking, and they had seen their Alpha's face in the dirt.

"And the Elder Mother?" Dorian asked.

"Is no longer an elder," the old man said. "She will answer to the Court for the envoy."

Two of Dorian's guards took her by the arms.

She went without a word, but she looked at me over her shoulder, and her eyes were dry and full of hate.

"Redmoor needs a head," Dorian said.

"Redmoor needs protection," said the old man. "Our Beta will hold the seat until the winter moot. We ask the Lord of Nightwood to take the pack under his hand."

"I'll take it," Dorian said, "if the Luna agrees."

Every head turned toward me.

I hadn't been called Luna by anyone in six years.

I felt the word settle on me, and it fit.
