Chapter 23: The Last Move

Morwenna's POV

We went down by the back stair, in the dark, with my daughter wrapped in a blanket against my chest.

Dorian walked a pace ahead, with a sword he hadn't touched in a century.

Lucian was waiting on the nursery landing in his shirtsleeves.

"They'll come within the quarter hour," he said, low. "Verity found the steward's room while the hall was drunk. She told him where the nursery is, and that the Luna is above, with her lord."

"And Garrick?"

"Is carrying the lamp."

I wasn't surprised, and that surprised me.

"Where's Mum?"

"In the nursery, behind the door. Emmett is in the chimney."

I looked at him.

"He insisted," Lucian said.

We stepped into the alcove on the landing, where the tapestry hid the three of us.

I held my daughter very still.

She never made a sound.

Footsteps came up the stair.

First Garrick, with a lamp in his good hand, and his face set.

Behind him came Verity, and behind her the steward's eight, in grey cloaks, with their blades bare.

They moved quietly.

They had done this before, somewhere else.

"There," Verity whispered, and pointed.

The nursery door stood a hand's breadth open, and a candle burned low inside.

"Quickly," the steward said, behind them. "Take the cradle. Bring the child to me."

Two of the men went in.

A moment later one of them came out with a bundle of white blankets in his arms and a grin on his face.
