Chapter 17: Marta's Cap
We searched the atrium, the kitchens and the staff car park for an hour.
Marta was gone, and so were two of the waiters.
At one in the morning, in the villa's hall, Tancredi's phone buzzed once.
It was a video, thirty seconds long, sent from a number nobody knew.
Marta sat on a folding chair in a bare room, with her glasses crooked and her lemon cap pulled low.
"Dottoressa," she said to the camera. "I'm fine. They won't give me anything to eat but crackers. Tell Tancredi if they touch my knitting, I'll bite."
Then a man's hand turned the phone around.
Ignazio looked into the lens, in the camel coat he had worn to the gala.
"My brother's ring," he said. "The Don's seal, for the nurse. The Donna brings it herself to the back room of the club, at three. Alone."
The screen went black.
Tancredi set the phone down very carefully on the hall table.
"No," he said.
"Rule one," I said. "You tell me everything before you do it."
"This isn't me doing something. It's a trap."
"Of course it's a trap. He wants me in a room without you."
"Adriana."
"He's holding a fifty-two-year-old nurse for a piece of gold." I took my coat off the hook. "I'm going to the Don."
The Don was awake, propped on three pillows in the locked room, with the ring still on his left hand.
I told him in six sentences.
He looked at the ring, then at me.
"Marta changed my bandages for two days and told me I was a terrible patient," he said.
