Chapter 21: Ignazio, Before the Families
Adriana's POV
The long table at the social club had fourteen chairs on each side and one at the head.
The Don sat in the one at the head, with a blanket over his knees and a glass of water.
Ignazio stood at the foot with six men and a lawyer.
I sat at the Don's right hand, in the seat for the Donna, and my husband stood behind my chair.
"Dottoressa," the Don said. "Begin."
I called the first witness.
The soldier from bed twelve came in on a cane, with his wrist in a brace and his eyes on the floor.
He said it in plain words.
He said Ignazio had ordered the Don shot at the gala.
He said Ignazio had ordered the guard in the Don's room silenced, and that he, the witness, had done it.
He said Ignazio's daughter had stood in the room that morning and smelled of lemon.
"She said she wanted it done before the surgeons could see the bag," he said. "Her father said the bag was hung already and the surgeon would take it."
Ignazio's lawyer rose.
"This man is a paid liar who lost the use of a wrist to the Donna's knife," he said. "My client has no knowledge of any of it."
"Sit down," the old capo said, without lifting his stick.
The lawyer sat.
The Don turned his head.
"Ignazio. Do you wish to speak?"
"I wish to know why I'm being tried by a sick old man and a girl with a razor."
"That's a no," the Don said.
Then the old capo stood up and put an envelope on the table.
It was thick and cream-colored, and the corner was torn.
The dock captain stood and put down another. The union man put down a third.
One by one, around the room, the capos stood and laid an envelope in front of Ignazio.
It went on until the end of the table was a pile of paper.
