Chapter 25: Pier 66 Again
Tom came down the steps at the side of the stage to meet me.
He kissed the air next to my cheek.
He smelled like the same cologne.
"You look exactly right," he said. "Come see the toys."
Center stage there was a small white table with one chair.
On the table was a stand with a camera on an arm, pointing straight down at the tabletop.
"Document camera," Tom said. "Whatever's on this table goes up there."
He pointed at the screen.
He slid a blank sheet of paper under the lens.
Eleven feet of white paper filled the wall behind us.
"You sign, and the whole country watches the ink go down. Very human. Very real."
Beside the table stood a brass lever on a pedestal, as tall as my hip.
It looked off an old ship.
A cable ran from its base to a laptop at the side of the stage.
"And that's the switch," I said.
"That's the switch. It's wired to the admin console. Pull it, and the hold comes off. All forty-one thousand."
