Chapter 12: The Clause
The lawyer's office was on the eleventh floor of the Barrera tower, and Lorena sat in front of its door for fifty minutes.
At last the door opened and a gray-haired man in a gray suit looked down at her over his glasses.
"Señora Barrera," he said. "I'm told you refuse to leave."
"I want you to read me my marriage contract."
"I can send you a copy."
"I have a copy. I want you to read me the last page, out loud, in your voice."
He studied her face.
Then he stepped back and held the door open.
She sat in the leather chair across his desk, her bag in her lap and both feet flat on the floor.
He took a file from the cabinet behind him and laid it on the blotter.
"Señora, before I begin. Mr. Barrera gave me an instruction a year ago. I was not to read you this clause unless you came to me and asked for it yourself."
"I'm asking."
"Then I am released." He turned to the last page. "This is the line Mr. Barrera wrote in his own hand, the morning before the wedding, in this room."
He cleared his throat and read.
"Thirty days after Renata Mendiola regains consciousness, the second spouse alone may end this marriage by her signature. The first spouse waives any right to end it, to delay it, to contest it or to bargain over it."
Lorena did not move.
"The first spouse?" she said.
"Mr. Barrera."
"And the second?"
"You, Señora."
The lawyer turned the page and kept reading, in the same level voice.
