Chapter 15: The Price
I didn't open the door any wider.
"Say it again," I said.
"Let me in first." Cristina's breath fogged on the glass. "I took a cab. A cab, Meghan. Do you know what that cost me?"
"Twelve dollars."
"It was nineteen."
I let her in.
She stood in the middle of my black-and-white tile in a white coat with a coffee stain on the cuff.
Up close, without the blowout and the lashes, she looked about nineteen herself.
"Do you have oat milk?" she said.
"It's a deli."
"Fine. Whatever's in the pot."
I poured her a cup of my mother's five o'clock coffee, which could strip paint.
"Talk," I said.
"Not for free."
Of course not.
She set the cup down on my counter.
"You put me on my own live," she said. "In front of forty thousand people and my sponsor. I lost the skincare deal. I lost two more by Friday. My father took my car and my cards on Saturday after Tiziano did his little proposal on your floor."
"Why would your father care about that?"
"Because the whole South Side watched a Caravello dump a Scalise by phone and kneel to a deli girl two weeks later." She said deli girl like it still tasted good. "My father doesn't care about me. He cares that people laughed."
"And you want."
"A video. From you. Saying you're sorry you ambushed me at a charity event, and that you were emotional, and that I've been nothing but supportive of your journey." She tipped her head. "And you tag me."
