Chapter 16: Stitches
"Killian."
"I'm fine," he said into my hair. "Is your mother fine?"
"I'm fine," my mother said from under both of us. "I'm flat. Get off me so I can call somebody."
He rolled off onto his side, slow.
His T-shirt was full of glass. Little bright pieces of it, sticking out of the cotton, and red coming through around every one.
"Don't lie on your back," I said. "Don't you dare lie on your back."
"I wasn't going to."
The two men from the corner came running in over the broken window, guns out, shouting into their phones.
My mother got up off the floor, holding the counter.
She didn't call 911.
She took her cell phone out of her apron and dialed a number she knew by heart.
"Rosario," she said. "It's Eileen. Your son is bleeding on my floor."
The ER put him face down on a bed behind a blue curtain.
A doctor with tired eyes picked the glass out of his back with tweezers for an hour, one piece at a time, into a steel dish.
Twenty-two pieces in all, followed by thirty-one stitches across his shoulder blades and down his left side.
He didn't make a sound for any of it.
I held his hand on the edge of the bed, and he held mine back so hard my rings bit.
