Chapter 17: Thursday Noon
"Yes, Pop," Killian said.
Rosario sat down in the plastic chair with the bear in his lap.
He didn't say anything for a long time.
He just sat there under the bad light with Biscuit in both hands, the way he must have sat by another hospital bed sixteen years ago.
"You let me think you were from nowhere," he said finally.
"I was from nowhere."
"You were from Taylor Street." He looked at me. "From Eileen's alley."
He stood up slowly.
He put Biscuit back in the coat pocket, carefully, head first, and laid the coat over the chair.
"Thursday," he said to me. "Noon."
Then he went out through the curtain and didn't look back.
On Thursday the front of Fennelly's was a sheet of plywood.
Killian had painted OPEN on it in big white letters on Tuesday, with his stitches pulling.
My mother yelled at him from the sidewalk to get down off the ladder.
The line came anyway.
The line was longer, actually. Half of Taylor Street came to stand in it and look at the plywood and buy a sandwich they didn't need.
At noon exactly, a black car stopped at the curb.
Rosario got out by himself.
No driver held the door. No son.
