Chapter 19: First Frost
The first hard frost came on the twenty-second of October, three weeks after the last of the wheat went into the ground.
I know the date because that was also the night my old boss called.
It was a quarter to six, and Colby was drying the supper dishes with Grandpa's good towel.
I took the call on the porch.
"Casey, I'll be quick," he said. "Regional chief adjuster for the plains. Texas panhandle and Oklahoma, hail season starts in March. It's yours if you want it."
"That's a big job."
"It's yours. Think about it and call me by Friday."
I thanked him, and I meant it.
I stood on the porch with my phone against my chest, watching my breath fog.
When I came back in, the dishes were put away, and Colby was standing at the sink with his hands flat on the edge of it.
"Who was that?"
"My old boss."
"Is that what you want?"
"I told him I'd think about it."
I had said that out of habit, because I couldn't help being polite.
I watched his face take it as an answer.
"Term five," he said quietly.
"Colby."
"If you say the word, I'm gone by morning. I'm saying it now so you know it's still there."
"Why would I ever?"
"Travis said it in the parking lot. I was standing by the truck."
"He said everyone leaves."
"I'm not asking you to prove him wrong," Colby said, and picked up his hat. "I'm saying you have a whole life out there that isn't a wheat field, and I wrote the terms so you'd never have to choose between it and me."
"Nobody's choosing."
"Good night, Casey."
He knocked on the open door as he went out, from the outside, like the rule.
