Chapter 19: Redwater's Knife
I saw the knife leave the wolf's hand, and I could not move.
It turned once in the sun, end over end, on its way to the middle of Idris's back.
Somebody went past me.
Lorne had been standing at my shoulder with his sleeves pushed up, and now he was under the rope and lunging across the dust.
He did not shout.
He put his left arm out flat, as a man stops a door, and the knife went through his forearm and stuck.
Lorne grunted and sat down hard on the earth with the handle jutting from his sleeve.
"Ow," he said, mildly, to nobody. "That is a very sharp knife."
Idris spun round in the middle of the ring and saw it.
At the rope, a woman in a high collar had the thrower by the back of his coat.
It was Verity.
She had gone over the rope after him with no sound and caught him as he turned to run, and now she had his wrist bent behind him at an angle I had never known a Luna to know.
"Not in my pack, and not at my son," she said, quite pleasantly. "Odell, take him."
