Chapter 24: Luna
The Archive doors are oak, ten feet tall, and they had not stood open to strangers in forty-one years.
I put my shoulder to the left one myself.
It swung inward on a groan of old iron, and sunlight fell down the long room onto eleven hundred ledgers.
Behind me the whole Gathering had followed me down the hill, and nobody said a word.
The white-haired copyist stood at her desk, and the other eleven rose one by one.
"Luna," she said, and the word sounded like a hand on my back.
I looked up at the carved lintel above the door.
A blade struck through with a line, the oldest law in Silverpine.
"No blade past this threshold," I said. "That stays."
"Every pack at this Gathering may send a reader to the Archive, and a copyist of its own."
"They may copy any book on the shelf. The Compact goes first."
"With the ninth clause in it, in the middle, where it was cut out."
The old Alpha with the limp gave a short, rough chuckle.
"I'll send three," he said. "And I'll bring my own ink."
