Chapter 12: What He Knew

The enforcers took Rhett out through the side door.

He didn't fight them. He kept looking back at me over his shoulder, and I could not tell what he wanted my face to do.

The hall broke into noise behind him.

I walked out through the front doors and down the lodge steps into the cold, and nobody tried to stop me.

My hands were shaking again. I put them in my coat pockets.

Jodie had been surrounded at the foot of the stage by a dozen wolves, and the last I saw of her she had her arm tucked into Cormac's, laughing and crying at once.

The night air smelled of frost and smoke.

I heard the door open behind me.

I knew his step. I had known it since the day I met him, which seemed ridiculous, because I had known him for a week.

"Bronwyn."

I didn't turn around.

Torsten came down two steps and stopped a pace behind me. He left plenty of room.

"Rhett said something at the end," I said. "Ask him what he's known for four years."

"Yes," Torsten said.

"I'm asking."

The silence went on until I turned around.

He stood on the lit step with his hands at his sides. His face was perfectly calm, and his eyes were green, and he did not try to hide from me.

"I knew about you and Rhett," Torsten said. "I knew the whole time."

I had expected a little of this. I had not expected it to be so plain.
