Chapter 24: The Whole Photo
The moot that night was the loudest the stone hall had ever heard.
Three hundred wolves sat at the long tables, and every one of them knew about the east ridge.
Nobody said a word to my face.
They only grinned into their plates when I passed, and Cormac was so drunk on his own happiness that he had hugged the cook twice.
Torsten stood up at the head table when the plates were cleared.
He did not use the Alpha's voice. He used his own.
"Four years ago I made a mistake," he said. "I let a man tell me what a woman wanted without asking her."
The hall went quiet.
"Tonight I'm asking in front of you all, because she told me once that she had been hidden long enough."
He turned to me.
"Bronwyn Harlan, you have my mark and my name and my word. Is that still what you want?"
I stood, and the chair scraped.
I walked up the aisle in a green dress that Jodie had lent me, with the mark on my shoulder showing above the neckline, and I did not cover it.
"It is," I said, loud enough for the back wall. "I chose him on a good day, on my own feet, with nothing wrong. I'd like that on the record."
"It's on the record," Jodie called from the council chair.
The hall roared.
Torsten kissed me, in front of everyone, for a long time.
Cormac let out a whoop that cracked in the middle.
