Chapter 17: The Pond, Again

Dale was standing at the edge of his own pond at dawn, taking off his boots.

I found him there on Wednesday with the truck keys still in my hand.

Joanna had lent me her truck, and the grass was white with frost.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Thinking about the dock." He peeled off one sock. "In August, the week before Dad signed, I came out to fish."

"And?"

He wouldn't look at me.

"I saw Delaney at dusk, right here on the dock, in her good shoes."

"Doing what?"

"Pushing something off the end."

"What?"

"A gray tackle box in a feed sack." He rubbed his face. "There was a brick tied in with it."

"Did you ask her?"

"She said it was your mother's old sewing things."

"She said it hurt Dad to look at them."

He laughed once, sick.

"I believed her, Mason. I told her that was kind."

I looked at the black water.

It was fifteen feet deep at the dock end, and I knew exactly how cold it was.

"Dale."

"I put you in there." He pulled off his flannel and dropped it on the bank. "It can give me something back."
