Chapter 24: The Supper
The table ran the whole length of the market square.
They had pushed together every folding table in the Grange, the church hall and the school, and covered them with bedsheets.
Down the middle stood crates, stacked three high, with corn heaped in the top ones.
Tomatoes sat in wooden flats, red and split from the sun.
Beside them stood bowls of green beans and a slab of butter the size of a brick.
Somebody had strung work lights across the courthouse steps.
The sun was going down behind the clock tower when my car turned onto the square.
I got out with the duffel on my shoulder, because I hadn't wanted to leave it in the car.
The whole town stood up.
I had not expected that.
The old grower with the tomatoes started it, with his cap in his hand.
Then the rest of them rose in a ragged wave down both sides of the table.
Nobody clapped.
They just stood there, holding their forks.
"Sit down," I said, embarrassed. "You'll let the corn go cold."
A laugh went down the line, and they sat.
Joanna came around the end of the table in a clean white shirt.
Her hair was in a loose braid, and she had a smear of butter on her wrist.
She stopped in front of me and looked at the duffel.
"You brought it," she said.
"I wasn't sure where to put it."
"Give me that."
She took it off my shoulder and set it behind her chair.
Then she kissed me in front of everyone.
