Chapter 12: Known

"Kennedy?"

Shay was watching me from the driver's seat.

"You've gone white."

"I'm fine. Keep going."

"That's about it. The ref called a flagrant foul. They looked at the tape, but the camera was on the wrong side of the court." He rubbed his face. "Eastlake's coach didn't back me up. The board suspended me for the season. And the offer from Ohio just stopped answering my calls."

"You never told anyone what you saw?"

"I told everyone. Nobody wanted it." He gave a short, tired laugh. "He's the captain of a team that lost. They needed someone to blame, and I was the right size."

I turned and looked out the window.

The river made a black line below us, and the town lights trembled on the water.

I wanted so badly to say it.

The name sat behind my teeth, heavy as a stone.

But I'd made a promise.

I also believed, with a sick certainty, that I was holding a piece of the truth that Shay had been missing for six months.

"Shay," I said. "What if he didn't mean to?"

"What if who didn't mean to?"

"Mason." The name sounded strange in the quiet car. "What if he fell, and it hurt, and he panicked? What if he said the first thing he thought of?"
