Chapter 20: Trial, Day One

I didn't plug it into anything.

I held it in my palm in the hallway, in Finn's sweatshirt, with my neighbor reading over my shoulder.

"Is that it?" she whispered. "The thing from the news?"

"I think so."

"Well, don't stand there. Go watch it."

"Not here."

We drove to Brookline.

Robbie was in my parents' driveway in his wedding shirt, beating my father at ping-pong on a table they'd dragged out of the garage.

"Seven to two," Robbie called. "He cried a little."

"I had something in my eye," my father said.

Then he saw my face, and what was in my hand, and he put down his paddle.

We watched it in his study with the door locked.

My father, my mother, Finn and me.

Robbie was outside losing a game of catch to my mother's tomato plants on purpose, because he'd been told to.

The clip was four minutes long.

I won't say what was on it yet, because the jury didn't know yet either.

I'll say that my mother put her hand over her mouth.

I'll say that Finn watched it once, all the way through.
