Chapter 14: The Birth Record

Laurence's POV

The social worker looked at me for a long time.

"Mr. Carrington, a statement is not a legal relationship."

"Then give me the form."

She had one in her folder, an acknowledgment of paternity, two pages, with a line for the lab result.

I took the DNA report out of my inside pocket and laid it on the coffee table, and I sat down to read the form.

I read all of it.

Ciara stood behind my shoulder with Birdie on her hip.

She read it too, a line behind me, and I heard her think, *He's reading it. He actually reads it.*

I signed on the second page.

My hand did not shake, which surprised me.

"That makes me her father on the record," I said. "Today. Not in ten days, and not after a hearing."

"It helps," the social worker said carefully. "It doesn't undo the report."

"Then let me finish the report."

I told her.

I had not planned to.

I said I had stood in a lobby a week ago and called the mother of my child a thief in front of a hundred people.

I said I had put my hand on her face and wiped my fingers after.

I said a woman on my staff had told me Ciara left with money and another man, and I had believed it for six years because it came with a signature.

"The child was starving because I never looked for them," I said. "Put that in your file. Put my name next to it."

The social worker's pen stopped.

"Mr. Carrington, that is a very unusual thing to give a caseworker."

"It is a true thing."

She closed the folder slowly.

"I will recommend the order be stayed. A home visit in three days. The child stays with her mother and her father in this residence, her treatment continues, and no one else lives in it who is not cleared."
